              Williams Soccer Defeats Smith 4-3

Northampton, MA: The Ephs of Williams College improved their record to 2-0-1 this afternoon as they defeated Smith College 4-3. Williams took a 1-0 lead at the 5:10 mark as Smith scored an “own” goal when a Pioneer defender deflected the ball into Smith’s goal. Williams got on the board again 10 minutes later as Alix Oliver (Louisville, KY) received a pass from Brittany Esty (Park City, UT) and found the back of the net. Smith’s Catherine Peo (Stow, MA) scored the first goal for the Pioneers two minutes later beating two defenders and sending the ball into the right back corner of the goal. With 19 minutes remaining in the first half, Hannah Stauffer (New Canaan, CT) scored for the Ephs with the assist going to Kate Harkey (Nashville, TN) to take a 3-1 lead into the half. The Pioneers opened the second half scoring at the 62:21 mark as Peo served a cross to Milena Milenkovic (N. Vancouver, British Columbia) who headed the ball into the deep right corner to bring Smith within one. The Pioneers tied the game up at 74:05 on a direct kick by Peo following an Eph’s foul. With 14:59 remaining in regulation, Katie Howard (Fayetteville, AR) scored the winning goal after receiving the pass from Stauffer. Monica Jarman (Berkeley, CA) made 9 saves for the Pioneers while Sarah Ginsburg (Dallas, TX) stopped 2 shots.

    The Pioneers, who drop to 1-2-0, host Simmons College on Saturday, September 18th at 1 pm.
