Exhibition Opening + Lecture

On Campus, Wright Hall, 5:30 pm - 8:00 pm

The celebration of the opening of Touch Fire: Contemporary Japanese Ceramics by Women Artists begins in Weinstein Auditorium (Wright Hall) with a conversation between Dr. Todate Kazuko, Chief Curator at the Tsukuba Art Museum (Ibaraki, Japan) and featured ceramicist Shigematsu Ayumi about the exhibition and the role of women artists in the world of contemporary Japanese ceramics. The Museum will remain open from 4-8 pm. A reception located in the Museum's Atrium will immediately follow the lecture (approximately 7-8 pm).

Teacher Workshop: Japanese Ceramics

K-12 Teachers are invitied to join us for an in-depth look at the practice of ceramics in Japan, from the mid-20th century to today, and specifically at the women ceramicists represented in SCMA’s fall exhibition Touch Fire: Contemporary Japanese Ceramics by Women Artists. The workshop includes gallery activities led by SCMA Curatorial and Education Department staff and a visit with featured artist Shigematsu Ayumi. A fee of $25 (members, $20), required with registration, includes morning coffee and lunch. Registration is limited to 20 teachers, and should be received by October 13. Lunchtime Gallery Talk: The Science of Ceramics

David Dempsey, Associate Director for Museum Services and instructor for Chemistry of Art Objects will lead an introduction to the chemistry of ceramics, with an overview of the changes that occur at the atomic level from firing through glazing. Looking closely at works in SCMA’s fall exhibition—Touch Fire: Contemporary Japanese Ceramics by Women Artists—we will discuss the science behind certain effects the artists achieve in their work.

Families with young children are invited to share a day of art-filled exploration and hands-on experimentation, featuring our Touch Fire: Contemporary Japanese Ceramics by Women Artists exhibition. See a local artist demonstrate ceramics technique, and try your hand at a variety of projects that focus on handcrafted objects in the Museum’s collection. Family Day activities and Museum admission are free all day. Spanish-speaking greeters and Smith student volunteers will be present. Art projects are designed for ages four and up, accompanied by an adult. No registration is required; drop in anytime during Family Day hours (project areas close at 3 pm, galleries will remain open until our regular closing time of 4 pm).

Katsumata Cheiko will lead a gallery talk about her artwork on display in Touch Fire: Contemporary Japanese Ceramics by Women Artists with Samuel C. Morse, Professor of the History of Art and Asian Languages and Civilizations at Amherst College, as translator.
