La Blonde Gasconne (The Fair Maid of Gascony), c. 1850

Curator‘s Comments

This painting has been described as one of Corot’s most celebrated representations of women. Recalling the prototype of Venetian portraits of the sixteenth century, this self-possessed woman is quite different from Corot’s more melancholy female figures.
