4 + 5 APRIL, 2008
In a world of global commerce and communication,
Anglo-American academic and commercial art institutions
have taken on the challenge of making meaning of art
from all cultures of the world. While art historians grapple
with the complexities of adapting methodologies in the
aftermath of Western post-colonialism and multiculturalism,
trans-national curators and contemporary artists are
redefining the very notion of borders. Symposium speakers
will address the global influences that are reshaping their
insight into human understanding and art.
The backdrop for the symposium is the Smith College
Museum of Art’s spring exhibition, African Beaded Art:
Power and Adornment.
