The last major exhibition before the Smith
College Museum of Art closes for a two-and-a-half-year renovation and expansion project, American
Spectrum is the centerpiece of the fall season, a semester-long exploration of
American art. It coincides with the release of a scholarly catalogue of the American collection, Masterworks
of American Painting and Sculpture from the Smith College Museum of Art, edited by
Associate Curator of Painting and Sculpture Linda Muehlig, and published by Hudson Hills
Press. The installation at Smith is the first stop in an eight-site
national tour.
"With the advent of the millennium and a new building campaign on the
immediate horizon, the publication of this catalogue offers the opportunity to revisit the
past, by celebrating the masterworks of this institutions inaugural collections, and
to look forward to the museums future."
