America has changed significantly in the last one hundred years. We moved from an agricultural society, to an industrial one, to a technological one. Work has changed. Transportation and communication have changed. Our attitudes about the land and immigration and our very identity have changed as well. The artwork of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries can give us a unique glimpse into this changing social landscape as witnessed by artists in their own time.
