Table Clock with Astronomical and Calendar Dials Ludwig Hyrschottel (Eirerschottel) Augsburg, ca. 1658 Gilt brass, gilt copper, brass, iron, blued iron, bell metal, and silver The beginnings of Augsburg's craft guild system go back to the fourteenth century when clockmakers were included in a guild of general smiths sanctioned in 1368. Ludwig Hyrschottel, the maker of this clock, is documented among the clockmakers who worked for the Munich court of the Wittlesbach dukes of Bavaria. He was granted his mastery in Augsburg on August 8, 1658. It is probable that this clock was his submitted masterpiece. |
