Producing work for display both within and outside of gallery spaces, contemporary artist Michael Rakowitz draws on a number of disciplines in his projects—design, architecture, history, activism, performance and installation. Hear the artist speak about his work, including paraSITE, a temporary shelter created for the homeless on view in the Beyond Green exhibition.

"Junkjam" Junk Music Concert

Going along with the "sustainable" theme of the Beyond Green exhibition, the "Junkman," musician Donald Knaack (www.junkmusic.org), will perform music with his instruments (discarded objects such as automobile brake drums). Some audience participation will be asked for. The Junkman's motto is "Music people want to hear played on objects they don't want." Knaack has composed music for Twyla Tharp Dance, ESPN, and Dance Theatre of Harlem, and has performed with Phish, on Late Night with Conan O'Brian, and in the Vans Warped Tour.

As part of the Beyond Green: Toward a Sustainable Art exhibition opening festivities, families with children of all ages are invited to participate in a free musical workshop with the "Junkman," musician Donald Knaack (www.junkmusic.org). Knaack re-purposes everyday objects and uses them to make music.

Solar-powered backpacks…garbage bags reconceived as portable shelters to highlight the problem of homelessness…K-12 teachers are invited to come and learn about the contemporary artists whose work reaches beyond "green" and toward the realm of environmental sustainability. This workshop includes a tour of Beyond Green: Toward a Sustainable Art, and hands-on activities led by Museum staff and art professionals. Connections among the exhibition, local "green" organizations, and K-12 school curricula will be emphasized. Teachers from all grades and disciplines are encouraged to attend. A fee of $25 ($20 members) covers all materials, a certificate of participation, and a box lunch. Contact museduc@smith.edu or 413.585.2781 to register.

Come out of your winter whites and get green! Celebrate the arrival of spring at the Museum by making works of art inspired by our natural environment. Meet the JAM artists and participate in a solar-powered art project inspired by their contribution to the special exhibition Beyond Green: Toward a Sustainable Art! Family Day activities and Museum admission are free all day. Spanish-speaking greeters will be present. Art projects are designed for children ages four and up, accompanied by an adult. No registration required; drop in anytime during Family Day hours.
