Professor Doctor Peter Klein, world specialist in dendrochronology
from the University of Hamburg, measured the tree rings on the
central panel of the altarpiece during a visit to the Straus Center.
By using x-radiographs to compare tree rings in the central panel
to master charts from Western Germany, Dr. Klein found plausible
felling dates between 1511. . . 1516. . . 1522, positing an earliest possible
creation date of 1511 for the altarpiece. Dr. Klein discovered that
boards II and III of the central panel are made from the same tree as
the left board of the Saint Anne side panel. |
