Art and Life in America: A Celebration of the Legacy of Oliver Larkin and American Art at Smith College On October 16, 1999, Smith College will present a scholarly symposium entitled "Art and Life in America: A Celebration of the Legacy of Oliver Larkin and American Art at Smith College." This event commemorates the 50th anniversary of Oliver Larkin's Pulitzer-Prize-winning book, Art and Life in America, a pioneering text in the social history of American art. Larkin introduced one of the first college courses in American art at Smith in 1940. The symposium celebrates his legacy as well as the college's 120-year history of collecting American art. It also coincides with the publication of a catalogue featuring American masterworks from the Smith College Museum of Art and their reinstallation. Speakers include Michele Bogart, The State University of New York, Stony Brook; John Davis, Smith College; Patricia Junker, The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco; Elizabeth Mankin Kornhauser, Wadsworth Atheneum; Amy Kurtz, Yale University; Linda Muehlig, Smith College Museum of Art; and Alan Wallach, The College of William and Mary. Support for this symposium has been provided by The Henry Luce Foundation, Inc., as part of its American Collections Enhancement initiative; the Smith College Lecture Committee; the Smith College Museum of Art; the Smith College Department of Art; and the Smith College Program in American Studies.
