Art and Life in America: A Celebration of the Legacy of Oliver Larkin and American Art at Smith College
October 16, 1999 / Wright Hall, Smith College

How to Get to Smith College

Smith College is located in the town of Northampton in the Connecticut River valley of western Massachusetts.

By car: Northampton is on Route 91. Take Exit 18, and follow Route 5 north (Pleasant Street) into the center of town. Turn left onto Route 9. Follow Route 9 (Main Street) through downtown Northampton. Just after passing the Academy of Music at the intersection of Route 9 and South Street (Route 10), you will come to the intersection of Route 9 and Route 66 (West Street). The college is just past this intersection. You will see the college on your left and Saint Mary's Church on your right. The Smith College Museum of Art is on Route 9 (which is now called Elm Street) across from Bedford Terrace.

Wright Hall is in the center of campus behind Neilson Library.

Parking is available along Route 9 (Elm Street), Bedford Terrace, and Prospect Street (another side street off of Route 9, north of Bedford Terrace). In addition, there is a large public parking garage for all-day parking in downtown Northampton, about a 10-15 minute walk from campus. The garage is located behind Thornes Marketplace on Main Street and is accessed from Main Street via Crafts Avenue (by City Hall) to Old South Street to Hampton Avenue or via Pleasant Street to Armory Street. Rates are 50¢ per hour for the first three hours and 30¢ per hour thereafter.

By bus: Peter Pan, Greyhound and Vermont Transit serve the area. Most routes go to the main bus terminal in Springfield, Massachusetts, where you can catch another bus to Northampton. Buses run almost hourly between Springfield and Northampton. Smith is a 10-minute walk or a short taxi ride from the bus station. Call (413) 586-1030 for bus schedules.

By train: Amtrak (800-872-7245) serves Springfield, Massachusetts, which is about 20 miles south of Northampton. From the train station, you can reach Northampton by taxi, shuttle service, or bus. The Springfield bus station is a short walk from the train station.

By air: The closest airport is Bradley International. It is served by most major airlines and is located about 35 miles south of Northampton near Hartford, Connecticut. Flying into Bradley rather than to Boston's Logan Airport gives you a shorter drive to Northampton and spares you city traffic congestion.

For shuttle service from Bradley International Airport or the Springfield train station contact: Valley Transporter (413) 253-1350 (800-872-8752) or Bradway's Limousine (413) 786-1976 (or 800-325-1976).
