Column of Trajan, Rome Votive
Column of Trajan was built and completed by the year 113. The main function was to commemorate the successful military campaigns of the Emperor Trajan against the people of Dacia in central Europe. The column stands at 138 feet and the entire length of the column is decorated with a winding strip of relief sculptures.
There are three aspects of Trajan’s column that set it apart from other monuments of its time: a chamber was carved in the base to house the ashes of Emperor Trajan, the spiral staircase led to a viewing platform at the top, and the continuous sculpted frieze which adorned the exterior of the column.
