Inspired by three objects in the SCMA collection, a Luba ceremonial axe and a pair of Songye prestige stools, this exhibition explores how neighboring peoples – in this case the Luba, Songye and Hemba peoples who live along or near the Lualaba River in the southeastern region of the Congo - influenced each other in their artistic production while still retaining their characteristic modes of expression.
Dr. John Pemberton III, the Museum’s curatorial consultant for African art and the guest curator of the exhibition, and Linda Muehlig, Associate Director for Curatorial Affairs wrote essays. The introduction was written by Jessica Nicoll, Director and Chief Curator at SCMA.
