How do we know what we know about people of the past? Join a “field school” with a focus on art & archaeology for K–12 teachers to discover how objects tell stories, in this case about what life was like in 79 AD around the time that Mount Vesuvius erupted. Set up camp for four days in the Museum and dig into learning about objects in the exhibition, Leisure and Luxury in the Age of Nero: The Villas of Oplontis near Pompeii as well as works in SCMA’s permanent collection galleries. Immerse yourself in the ancient world through presentations by guest scholars, poetry writing and art-making experiences, campus expeditions, as well as guided conversations and interactive explorations of art objects in our galleries.

A certificate will be provided to document the professional development hours. Curricular materials to support in-gallery and classroom learning will be provided. Teachers are encouraged to create pre-visit lessons or student in-gallery assignments as a result of this experience.
