Teacher Workshop: S.T.E.A.M.— EVENT IS FULL

    Smith faculty and staff will introduce S.T.E.(A.)M. concepts and lead explorations of works in SCMA’s collection that demonstrate the interdisciplinary nature of the artistic process.

  • River of Gold: First Look With Elizabeth Klarich, Five College Assistant Professor of Anthropology and Fernando Armstrong Fumero, SC Assistant Professor, Department of Anthropology 

    Elizabeth Klarich and Fernando Armstrong Fumero will lead a conversation and gallery tour of River of Gold: Precolumbian Treasures from Sitio Conte. This exhibition presents more than 120 pieces of goldwork created by artists and artisans from an ancient American society in central Panama. Drawn from the collection of the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology (Penn Museum) in Philadelphia, the exhibition includes large embossed plaques, cast pendants and nose ornaments, gold-sheathed ear rods, and bead necklaces, as well as polychrome ceramics. These and other objects were recovered from excavations carried out in 1940 by the Penn Museum at Sitio Conte, an archeological site in present day Coclé province on the western side of the Gulf of Panama.
