ID Tags is an ongoing series of supplemental labels for artworks at the Smith College Museum of Art. In contrast to traditionally anonymous museum labels, this project aims to connect art to individuals’ sense of their culture and themselves. Groups of Smith faculty, staff and students come together to think about artworks through the lens of a theme, such as race, childhood, or body image, and write an ID Tag that is rooted in what they know and who they are. It is our hope that such reflections will give voice to our community, online and within our galleries, and will enhance visitors’ experience of a work of art by showing how what we see is shaped by who we are.
ID Tags are a starting point for dialogue and personal reflection. Join in the discussion about these artworks and the ideas expressed in the “tags” themselves.
