Marylin Rhie earned an M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Chicago.
In collaboration with Professor Robert Thurman of Columbia University, Professor Rhie curated a major exhibition of Tibetan art, titled "Wisdom and Compassion, the Sacred Art of Tibet," and co-authored a book with the same title. With Professor Thurman she also wrote a book on the Rubin collection of Tibetan painting, Worlds of Transformation (1999). She is currently completing volume II of a series (published by Brill in Leiden) titled Early Buddhist Art of China and Central Asia.
