John Davis offers courses covering the history of art and architecture in the United States, from the seventeenth through the mid-twentieth centuries. He is the author or co-author of four books and museum catalogues, as well as several dozen articles and essays. His most recent work concerns the iconology of the banjo during the Civil War and Reconstruction periods (part of the forthcoming exhibition, “Picturing the Banjo,” Corcoran Museum of Art); and the architectural “identity” of the National Academy of Design. With support from the Henry Luce Foundation, he is also at work on a volume of primary sources in American art history.
