Brigitte Buettner teaches courses covering the European Middle Ages, among which are an introduction to medieval art and upper-level courses on specific periods. She also participates in Art Historical Methods and offers colloquia onthe history of portraiture as well as on Relics, Reliquaries, and Pilgrimages. Her area of research focuses on secular arts in late medieval court society north of the Alps. Her publications include Boccaccio's "Des clères et nobles femmes" Systems of Signification in an Illuminated Manuscript (1996) and a forthcoming article on the images and rituals of gift-giving on New Year's Day around 1400.
