André Dombrowski teaches the history of European modern art and architecture from the French Revolution to WWII. His research interests include late-nineteenth century French, German and British painting with an emphasis on the history of science, politics and nationalism. He is currently revising his dissertation on Cézanne’s early psychological paintings, completed at UC Berkeley in 2006, into a book. An essay on Cézanne’s artistic engagement with the Franco-Prussian War and the Commune appeared in The Burlington Magazine in September 2006. He has previously published on Adolph von Menzel, and an essay on Hans von Marées is forthcoming. In 2004-5, he was a pre-doctoral fellow at the Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC.
