"I am working for the Estee Lauder Companies in the Origins brand division. My job is currently in transition, but right now I help manage a global sales education staff (it's primarily domestic, but we have trainers in Denmark, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, Sweden, Taiwan and the United Kingdom as well). I also develop and coordinate seminars, write a sales recognition newsletter, and am responsible for all of the department's money-which I don't like at all (the responsibility that is, not the money)! And I am just beginning to teach seminars. My boss just called to tell me she's sending me to teach in Hawaii and Guam! I'm very excited about that. I think Smith has prepared me for the workforce in several ways. First, before I came to Smith I never thought I would have to push myself harder. than anything I did in competitive gymnastics. Now I consider my thesis to be one of the most challenging things I have ever accomplished! So whenever I am faced with a challenge or difficulty, I know I can handle it-and handle it well. Second, because my job is about 75% writing, the writing skills I left with are crucial to my work- and have actually shaped my job. My boss knew I wanted to write and as a result has created a writing job for me. Finally, because I deal with people from around the world, an understanding of different cultures has been very important. Even if I know nothing about a particular culture, I am still able to go into things with a general understanding of respecting differences in regions, culture. It seems very basic, but I have found that it is a crucial part of getting along with others and doing my job well." |
