Testimony from Recent Graduates in American Studies

Emily M. Smachetti '93

"After graduating from Smith in 1993, I took a year off, did some traveling, and prepared to go to law school. Frankly, I was not thrilled with my perceived employment options without a graduate degree of some sort, and had always kicked law around as an option. In thinking about law schools, I focused primarily on the quality of life of the law students at various places and settled on Vanderbilt, which turned out to be a fantastic choice for me. As an interesting aside, only six women were invited to join the Vanderbilt Law Review from my class, and I believe four of us were the product of a women's college.

I am currently an associate at a medium-sized Nashville firm where I am a member of the litigation department. My practice is comprised of general litigation, with some emphasis on products liability and employment matters. On a fundamental level, I feel that my work deals with the rules, some of them long-standing, that govern the ways that individuals function in society. Because of my background in American Studies, I feel that I have a greater appreciation for the historical context that gave rise to many of these legal rules, rights and obligations. I hope that I am a better lawyer because of my historical perspective on the rights that I seek to vindicate for my clients."
