Testimony from Recent Graduates in American Studies

Phoebe Slanetz '96

"After graduating from Smith in 1996, I began working in the Development & External Relations Office at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, where I received a Master's in Education, with a concentration in Arts in Education, in June 1999. Since January 1999, I have been working in the Development Office at the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the world's largest symphonic organization.

As the Assistant Director of Development Research, I assist in the management and planning of the Development Research program at the Boston Symphony Orchestra. I am responsible for identifying prospective donors to the BSO 2000 Campaign, the $130 million Campaign for the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and for providing in-depth biographical and financial donor profiles to the Managing Director, Trustees, Overseers, and Development Staff who are involved in the cultivation and solicitation of major gifts.

American Studies allowed me to pursue my interest in everything 'American' and helped to strengthen my analytical, written, and communication skills that I use daily in my position at the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Many of the Boston Symphony Orchestra's current and prospective donors, I see as shaping our history and making an impact on American culture and society through their philanthropy."
