"I have been Executive Assistant to J. Carter Brown, director Emeritus of the National Gallery of Art, for about 7 years now. I chose American Studies as a major hoping its broad range of political, economic, and cultural interdisciplinary courses, spanning past centuries as well as into the future, would give me a competitive, intellectual edge in seeking employment in Washington, D.C. I have not been disappointed. Personally and professionally, almost everything is an American study. Applying research skills, using historical perspective, and identifying interdisciplinary commonalities sharpens my problem solving and proves successful in a multitude of my responsibilities. Much of my analytical skill and resourcefulness can be credited to the American Studies coursework and mentoring at Smith." |
