"Immediately after graduating from Smith with a B.A. in American Studies, I entered a Ph.D. program in Early American History (MA, Vanderbilt University, Ph.D. pending, University of Virginia). When I finish the degree, I hope to become either a professor of Early American History and Women's History, or go into academic administration; for example, becoming director of a university Women's Center, or a dean. I was concerned that because my B.A. was in American Studies and I was entering a Ph.D. program in history that I would be unprepared for my history courses. This fear was unfounded. Instead, my classes in American Studies at Smith prepared me thoroughly, not only for my own research and coursework in graduate school, but also for teaching undergraduate courses of my own. College students ask all kinds of questions, and the breadth of my undergraduate degree makes it easier to answer them!" |
