What Smith Gave to Me
The college's mission to provide
the finest possible education to women is personified
in the lives of alumnae. We asked women of different
ages and interests to comment on how their Smith
experience has affected their continued learning
and life choices.
My Smith education has taught me to think
independently, to read critically and to
write concisely. It has taught me follow
through, with passion, any endeavor which
I undertake striving always to improve the
status of man/woman in our world as well
as the necessity of preserving and conserving
all of Nature in our world.
My Smith education has been the most important
experience of my life; socially and professionally.

I value my Smith education because "of
the opportunity it
provided for focused and in-depth scholarship."

I discovered documentary film while I
was a student at Smith. The close
proximity to Northampton's vibrant arts
community, and its many
theaters, fueled my passion for non-fiction
filmmaking.
The Smith Scholars program enabled me to
design my own senior thesis,
which in my case was a documentary video.
I spent over a year
researching, writing, filming, and editing
a 63-minute documentary
video. Smith College purchased a brand-new
camera for me to use, and I
learned the basics of editing at Smith at
the nonprint resource center.
I had wonderful advisors.
Making that documentary was one of the most
enjoyable experiences of my
life, and the experience completely influenced
my career path. I greatly
value the freedom, encouragement, creativity,
and rigor of the Smith
Scholars program.
