Faculty, honorants, trustees, and senior staff assembled in the King/Scales Quad awaiting the sound of the bagpipes opening the 2003 Commencement ceremony. This was a particularly significant Smith event for retiring professors Robert Averitt, economics; William Wittig, music; Thomas Derr, religion; Peter Pufall and Donald Reutener, psychology; Peter Rose, sociology; and Joan Afferica, history, as well as for Shelly Lazarus '68, who will be leaving her position as Chair of the Board at the end of her term.
