Today's students arrive at Smith
with high expectations for athletic
facilities-and Smith has responded. Renovations
to athletic facilities
provide expanded opportunities for competitive
sports, club sports, and
personal fitness habits that will be useful
throughout life.
The new Olin Fitrness Center, fully utilized
from its first open day, provides attractive
and important support to athletic team training
and all
women who take personal health and fitness
seriously. The Center offers more
than 30 new pieces of aerobic equipment (each
with its own television set),
40 new weight machines and an array of free-weight
equipment. The facility
can accommodate about 100 people exercising
simultaneously.
The $4 million Olin Fitness Center was made
possible by a gift from the
Spencer T. and Ann W. Olin Foundation in honor
of Barbara Olin Taylor '54
and Judy Olin Higgins '58.
Most young women who come to Smith have had
an early start in sports and are
accustomed to excellent facilities, year-round
coaching, and high levels of
competition. Fitness training, an essential
part of team and individual
programs, is now available in a state-of-the-art,
light-filled setting.
