| Capital Gifts
Generally, capital gifts are contributions
of $100,00 or more made for special programs
and physical facilities, endowed funds, or deferred
gifts and bequests.
Unrestricted
and Restricted Gifts
If your gift is unrestricted, the college can
apply the funds where they are most needed,
based on the assessment of trustees, faculty,
and administrative staff. Each year, unrestricted
gifts allow the college to fund new and innovative
programs, such as Smiths universal internship
program. An unrestricted gift might fund an
academic chair that can be directed toward an
emerging area of study or endow a program that
must expand to serve more students.
Restricted gifts allow the college
to fund long-range needs while satisfying a particular
donor interest. For example, named gifts may endow
scholarships, academic chairs, or scientific research.
Restricted gifts may also fund additions to Smiths
physical plant, such as building the new campus
center, or improving the fine arts center or science
labs.
Endowed Funds
An endowed fund has a continuing impact on the
life of the college. Endowed funds may be created
to support scholarships, internships, faculty
salaries, a music performance series, purchase
of print or digital resources for the libraries,
scientific equipment, or a host of other purposes.
The college carefully invests
endowment to achieve a healthy rate of return
that provides for current needs and long-term
growth.
Smith provides all donors with
periodic updates on the status and uses of endowed
funds.
Planned Gifts and Bequests
A planned gift can fulfill a long-desired philanthropic
interest and may also allow you to increase
income, save taxes, and make a gift that might
not otherwise be possible. Smith encourages
you to contact your financial advisors and Smiths
Office of Advancement, Planned
Gifts and Bequests, for specific and individualized
information.
