Minority Undergraduate Fellowships
funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation Encourage
Advanced Studies
Now in its fourth year, the Mellon Minority Undergraduate
Fellows program seeks to increase the number of
minority students enrolled in Ph.D. programs in
designated fields. Currently, nine Mellon Fellows
are enrolled at Smith and an additional six graduated
last year. Their special projects include a cross-cultural
comparative education study of urban schools,
a study of the role that the “conscious
hip-hop” movement plays in urban black life,
and the investigation of coral reef ecology through
hydrological research. Mellon Fellows who have
graduated are attending graduate schools like
Brown, Princeton, and NYU or are working in their
fields.
