In
creating the Picker Engineering Program, Smith is
reinventing the way engineering is taught, broadening
the way engineers look at the world, changing the
way the world sees engineers, and ultimately increasing
the number of women in the engineering workplace.
This past spring, 20 women graduated from Smith
with a B.S. in Engineering Science. Currently, there
are 132 students studying engineering at Smith.
The Picker Engineering Program is
- The first degree-granting engineering program
at a women's college in the United States
- The first engineering program to comprehensively
integrate engineering and the liberal arts
- The only engineering program where the majority
of the faculty is female (63%)
Director of the Picker Engineering Program, Domenico
Grasso, told the Christian Science Monitor:
"What I envision at Smith is an intimate
interweaving of the humanities and engineering.
It is not just technology, math, science. We want
to convey an ultimate reason for doing this, and
that reason is in essence, serving humanity."
This reflects the mission of founding philanthropists
Dr. Harvey Picker and his wife, Jean Sovatkin
Picker '42, U.S. Representative to the United
Nations Commission on Social Development.
Smith's Picker Engineering Program is designed
to cultivate a community of scholars recognized
programmatically and individually for contributions
to the advancement of engineering practice and
pedagogy. The program prepares Smith undergraduates
for leadership roles in both the practice of engineering
and in society by engendering:
- A deep conceptual understanding of engineering
science fundamentals
- The ability to translate fundamental principles
into socially responsible design
- Reductive and integrative approaches to problem
solving
- Critical thinking skills
- Strong written, oral, and visual communication
skills
- A passion for continuous learning and self-discovery
