| Kresge Foundation Challenge
To support the college’s first campus center,
the Kresge Foundation awarded Smith a $1-million
challenge grant in March 2003. To receive the
grant, Smith has one year to raise the remaining
$6.2-million needed to complete the $23-million
project. This dramatic new space, designed by
New York architects Weiss/Manfredi, fulfills the
following goals:
- Unite a student body spread across the campus
due to a decentralized residential system
- Create social space on campus for students,
faculty, and staff
- Offer dining alternatives with extended hours
- Provide a “front door” for the
campus with a central information center
This challenge comes at a critical point when
the campus center is in the final phase of construction. |
