Freeman Foundation Grants

Smith has received two grants from the Freeman Foundation—$271,850 for the foundation’s Undergraduate Asian Studies Funding Initiative and $105,139 for the Asian Art/Educational Outreach Funding Initiative.

Three exciting new courses created by the Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures will be offered in 2003-04: “Kyoto Through the Ages” and “Kyoto Then and Now” (on site), to be taught by Professor Tom Rohlich, and “Culture and Conflict in the Himalayas,” to be taught by Associate Professor Ravina Aggarwal.

The museum’s funding will integrate the presentation of Asian art into museum programming for K-12 school audiences, families, youth, and adults. Toward this end, a part-time museum educator for Asian art has been hired, 10 audio tour stops on Asian objects in the permanent collection have been completed, and planning sessions with area K-12 teachers have been held.
