Smith College Admission Academics Student Life About Smith Offices

 The beginning of year 2...

September 28, 2007

This past month of being back on campus has been great...but busy. It feels so strange to be a sophomore now and I've definitely introduced myself as a first year still a few times this year! [My first year was just that fantastic.... :)] Along with my awesome sophomore status comes a new set of responsibilities: this year I have to make some big decisions, something I am not so good at! This week in particular has made me realize the wide scope of opportunities awaiting me in my three years left at Smith. Right now, study abroad is at the top of my "have-to-do-someday" list. This past Tuesday, Smith hosted a pretty nice study abroad fair with representatives from all over the world. I must admit, it was kind of overwhelming to see all of the choices I have and, uhh, the decision I have to make. The study abroad office, though, has been an amazing resource! My friend Stefanie and I have been heading there a lot to browse over some student recommendations of different places. Smith also has a good website for study abroad info. (it's an amazing procrastination tool...). Right now I'm thinking of studying abroad at a field school in Costa Rica...or in Mexico....or Spain....or Brazil...or New Zealand... :) . I'll figure it out someday soon!
Another big decision that comes with sophomore year is that we have to declare a major. If you've read my "about me" page, it's pretty obvious that I have really random interests as far as majors and careers go but I think it's definitely good to take advantage of all the choices Smith gives you. Right now, I'm thinking of mainly being a Geology major. It's a great major if you like science and being outside and going on random trips to random places (tomorrow my class is heading out on a weekend trip to New York state)!
So, those are some of the things I'm thinking about right now. I'm excited to see how everything will come together but, for now, I'm enjoying all of my Smith experiences. For example, this week I've played intramural soccer with my house (we lost: but it was a good game!), polished rock samples from Croatian caves, ate at the Portuguese lunch table, completed an orienteering course around campus for my wilderness skills class, gone out to dinner downtown with my friends, and played fiddle with the Wailing Banshees. I'd say that's a typical week for me: a mixture of seemingly unrelated activites that all seem to come together in the end!
