 Spring Break!

March 29, 2009

The past few weeks have been absolutely crazy!!! But I’m glad that midterms are over and that this week I am getting all my papers and exams back and it seems that I did quite well despite all the stress I went through.

My last midterm and my last class took place on Friday only a couple of hours before leaving to go to Boston with my friend Marivic who was giving me and my friend Ulrika a ride to the city because our flight was leaving from there. We stayed in Boston for a couple of days until we left for sunny Mexico! We went to Cancun for a few days and we had a really good time. It was sunny and oh so warm! People were incredibly friendly and they were always helping us giving us direction about where to go and what to do.

The first day we went to a restaurant and I tried a Mayan beef stew with onions and cactus! It was surprisingly delicious! The next day we were able to go to the beach and it was absolutely gorgeous! The water was turquoise and really warm but the waves were a little strong. The next day we found out that apparently, that’s a surfing beach. No wonder there were so few people!

Even though the beach was great, I have always been an anthropology/archaeology geek so I was more excited about seeing the many Mayan sites that are around the Cancun area. First of all, we went to Coba and then to Tulum. It was absolutely amazing! I got to climb all the way to the top of the Nohoch Mul pyramid in Coba which is 138 feet tall, making it the highest in the Yucatan peninsula. We also went to a cenote, which is sink hole with exposed rocky edges containing groundwater. And of course, we also went to Chichen Itza, one of the most famous Mayan ruins. It was simply amazing!

After that however, our trip got a little bumpy. I got really sick to the point that I had to go see a doctor so I lost 3 beautiful days of sun and adventure. Not only that, I had to delay my return which meant that Ulrika and I got back on Tuesday. We missed two days of classes and now there’s a lot of work to catch up with so I better continue doing that!
