For high school, I attended a small magnet high school for math, science, and technology. Because my school was so small, very few electives were available. When I applied to colleges I was looking for an environment where I could diversify my education. I was also hoping to find peers and professors who would inspire me. Smith has given me all this and more.
My first semester at Smith I took classes in four different fields. I knew I liked everything from architecture and Judaism to government and Italian. It wasn't until my second semester when I took The American Presidency with Marc Lendler that I decided to be a government major. My sophomore fall semester I took a course called Religion and Politics in America, and it was from that course that I decided I wanted to focus on Jewish values in American politics and to minor in religion.
The people here are the primary reason I felt to comfortable in taking courses in things I wouldn't have previously considered. The students and the faculty are very open minded and want each student to achieve their highest potential. For me that meant friends urging me to give up things I was no longer enjoying and professors reassuring me that taking courses in things I was afraid of wasn't going to kill me. The friends I have made here are amazing. Each Smith student is filled with a dedication that I hadn't experienced before applying, whether that dedication be to one thing or many. I have found in them the inspiration I was looking for when I first applied. |
