 Summer plans

April 20, 2009

Well the semester is rapidly heading toward its end with only 2 more weeks of classes and a week of finals before summer break. That means warmer weather, final papers and projects, and figuring out summer plans. This summer I'm doing an internship with a non-profit organization located in Boston called the Family Equality Council. It's an unpaid internship, and since I don't live in Boston it would have been difficult for me to take the position without Praxis. Praxis is a fund that Smith has which gives Smith students an opportunity to take unpaid positions they would otherwise be unable to take. Each Smith student can receive $2000 in Praxis money once in their Smith career. In order to get it you have to fill out an application explaining the position and why its relevant to your career goals. The only real requirements are that the position be unpaid and that you work at least 220 hours. Once you fill out your application, you meet with a CDO (Career Development Office) representative and they go over your application with you and approve you on the spot as long as you meet the requirements. Within two weeks of being approved you get the first check of $1800. You get the remaining $200 upon the completion of your internship. It's a pretty easy process and it makes it possible for students to take the unpaid positions that are necessary for getting better jobs in the future. I'll be using my Praxis money to pay for housing, food, and transportation in and around Boston.
