| | Well it’s winter in New England and in case you’re not from the area, that means snow. Ever since we got back from J-term, Smith has been a winter wonderland. All the paths are lined with giant piles of the white, fluffy stuff and there are icicles lining the roofs of the houses, but the best part of all is the result of this snow: a snow day! On Monday, Smith had what I’m told is the first snow day in the past twenty years. It snowed all night and on Monday morning I awoke to a foot of fresh snow on the ground and a message in my inbox notifying me that classes has been cancelled due to inclement weather. Instead of going back to bed, I decided to get up and trudge through the snow to go to breakfast. The best part about waking up early and going to breakfast is walking through freshly fallen snow. Everything is pristine and sunshine-y, just waiting to be all messed up once everyone wakes up, but first thing in the morning everything is quiet and beautiful.
After breakfast at Cutter, I did a little bit of reading for class and then headed out to make a snowman. Turns out there’s a correct kind of snow for snowman making and this wasn’t it, though it was certainly interesting trying to make this snow squish together into a ball. Later, after lunch, several friends from my house went out sledding on the hill next to the pond. They came back an hour or so later, snow-covered and giggly. We spent the rest of the day inside making hot chocolate, watching movies, baking cookies, and playing board games. After dinner at Chapin, I went for a walk with a friend. We ended up walking on the pond, which has been frozen over for most of the semester. Usually they clear off part of it for ice skating, but they hadn’t cleared it since most of the staff was off for the snow day too, so the whole pond was covered in snow. We walked from the boat house out to the island, then over to the athletics field. It’s strange how close together they seem when you’re walking on the pond instead of walking around it. We also cleared off a little bit of the ice and skated and danced around under the moon. It was the perfect ending to my first Smith snow day. |
