| | Last night was my house’s senior banquet. It’s a night when we honor the seniors who are graduating from our house, and every house has one. In my house, we rent huge tables and fill the living room with them. Everything in the room gets decorated in green and yellow to represent the colors our house is painted. The meal is catered and everything revolves around the seniors. The traditions in each house vary, but some things are pretty standard. We start by eating dinner, then the first years perform skits of all the silly things the seniors have done throughout their time here. Next are the sophomores, who write predictions of what the seniors will do with their lives post-graduation. Then the few juniors who aren’t abroad give the seniors shirts, and finally the seniors will things on to all the people in the house who aren’t graduating. Some of them are completely silly, such as a glow in the dark Virgin Mary, and some of them are more useful, like suite furniture or a TV. This year I acquired a plant, a book, and a wristband, among other things. In general, the wills reflect some sort of story. For example, my first year I was willed a ceramic egg basket by a senior who was also a tour guide. She was given it her first year by a tour guide who was a senior at that point and thought it was hilarious that she had this Easter egg basket since she was Jewish. It was given to me since I fell into both those classifications. In general, the whole evening is a lot of fun, and it’s a kind of last hurrah to the seniors before finals hit and everyone is too busy with work to commemorate. |
