 I'm Trained!

April 01, 2009

A common occurrence with Smith students is being over-involved. I am no exception to this norm. My resume is about four pages, contains only things I have done in college and no matter how hard I try, I cannot manage to shorten it. Weeks like this week, when the homework is non-stop and makes me want to cry, I wonder why I wasn't more of a rebel. If I was a rebellious person I would be less involved and probably more relaxed. But since I'm not, let me tell you about my week thus far. I'll start with Friday.

Friday I actually went out. I know the word actually might scare admitted students. Don't think everyone is like me. We have a lot of work here, but people do manage to have a good time. I am just very committed to extracurricular activities and my classes, which leaves less time for the fun. But anyway, FRIDAY, I went to the Hoe Down party at Emerson House. Me and my friends danced for a few hours, which was a lot of fun. One of my friend's boyfriend's friends were here from UMASS, so there was real boy-girl flirting going on, which is always a nice change from the norm at Smith. Girls are so funny once guys are in the room. Anyway, we danced until our feet hurt and then came back to the house and tried not to move very much because we were in pain. But it was worth it.

Saturday during the day I had House President (HP) training. I was not looking forward to the training at all, especially when I found out we were supposed to meet on Chapin lawn (I knew instantly that this meant icebreaker games). Turns out, it was SO much fun. The icebreaker games were fun, not painful. I got to meet and play around with a bunch of other HPs. We even drew pictures in groups of what the perfect HP would look like (by including items to represent qualities). It was a four hour summer camp! I miss summer camp! Saturday night we had a girls night. Me and my two friends, Lily and Becky, had a slumber party! We put Becky's couch bed into the common area between our singles and made popcorn and melted penut butter M&Ms and played Sex in the City trivia game. I KNOW EVERYTHING. Its scary. Like really everything. How many of you would know at the drop of a hat who the editor of Carrie's book was? I do, Mashiko Kakatani. YES I RULE ALL. Then we put on a movie of my choice, which my friends hated, but thats a risk you have to take. When I woke up on Sunday morning, Becky was still asleep on my floor.

Sunday= Homework and House Council
Monday= Homework and meetings with professors and ALCOHOL TRAINING. I had to be Alcohol trained because I am the sponsor of my house's senior banquet this year. I thought alcohol training would be dull and repetitive and just tell us that drinking is bad and to not do it. But he didn't. He was a bartender from Boston (with a fabulously heavy accent) who goes around to colleges and teaches students about safe drinking, the signs of intoxication, how to ID check, how to intervene if someone is too drunk, the law. It was really funny too. He was like a comedian and really got through to us. The two hours went by really quickly and I'd love to bring him to my house to speak next year.

Yesterday was the worst day of my life. My boyfriend and I have been together for 4 years and yesterday was our anniversary. It is very nice being in a committed relationship, but it is so hard being away from each other. Today was especially hard and I wanted to be anywhere with him, not here alone. So I was pretty miserable and it was my crazy marathon day. Class in the morning and afternoon, then research at UMASS, then Senior Banquet Sponsor information meeting, then homework. But I was in such a bad mood (it happens!) that I didn't get much done. So the rest of this week is going to STINK.

Anyway, now I have class. If you all have any questions, feel free to ask, Ill get back to them ASAP.
