 A Moment to Remember Forever

November 06, 2008

Hi Everyone!

This past weekend has been SO crazy and unfortunately not in the party way! I have never done so much homework in my life. I think I spent 24 hours in the library, only to make a slight dent in all the work I had to accomplish. Luckily, I had very little work to do on Tuesday, November 4, 2008. Why did I just write out that whole date you may ask? Well, if you haven't figured it out, its because it was ELECTION DAY.

AHHHHHHHHH I COULD NOT BE MORE EXCITED ABOUT ELECTION DAY! Me and my friends went back and forth from hanging out in the house's living room with everyone (where there was soda and wings and such) to relaxing comfortably in my room eating chips and oreo's and watching the returns. This was the first presidential election that I was able to vote in, so I was really into watching the returns. I really felt as though I played a part in ELECTING BARACK OBAMA as the next PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA! Bye-bye Georgie! How amazing: 349 electoral votes to a mere 163 for McCain. And, he was announced at 11PM. I couldn't have been happier. Me and my friends were crying out of joy and then there was running and screaming and rioting and hugging all over campus! It was so crazy.
When it was announced my friend Caitlin says "Guys, do you realize that we are going to remember this moment for the rest of our lives. I watched Barack Obama be elected as President with my best friends. I'm going to tell my grandchildren about this moment." She's right. It was really one of those moments that for the rest of our live's we would remember.
The next day as I was walking down the street from my advisor's office, I saw a group of boys (about 20 of them and they looked around 12 years old maybe) on their scooters heading to the campus center for lunch. What were they doing you ask? Chanting. O-BAM-A, O-BAM-A. Just in case I had forgotten, that reminded me that we were in Northampton.

Halloween was pretty uneventful, we hung out in the house and played games and danced and the whole bit in our costumes. I was a Zebra and my best friend Sara was a Cheetah. My friend Becky was a VERY sexy housewife, and my friend Lily a sailorwoman. Jasmine was a cop and Rachel was a snowflake. We saw other people's costume around the house: Sarah Palin, a grandma, a Christmas present. It was okay, but it didn't even hold a candle to the excitement caused by election day.

Another exciting update in my life was that I decided to declare a minor in the Study of Women and Gender (SWG). I think I found my niche. I really enjoy all of my Sociology classes that involve women and gender and the causes for and types of subordination of women in society. I am taking a class this semester in the SWG department called Sexual Harassment in History, Law and Culture. It is by far my favorite class this semester and it has opened my eyes to a way I can help people through the law. Sexual Harassment law might be something I am interesting in pursuing during law school. I am not exactly sure, but I am really excited to take more classes in this department. Unfortunately, I can't watch any TV shows any more without thinking about how women and sexuality are represented and how the subordination and stereotypes of women are reinforced. It's really annoying. My major and now my minor have ruined television for me. But I still love them haha.

Okay, now that I have procrastinated sufficiently I'm going to start reading my research for my paper that is due Tuesday. Good Luck to anyone who applied to Smith early decision. Have a great weekend all!
