| | It's days like today that have me applying those old elementary school rhymes to the entirety of my life. March had definitely come in like a lion and out like a lamb, with midterms and the whirlwind that was Spring Break. But now April is definitely having showers, both physically and symbolically, but hopefully they will contribute to May flowers. Okay, corny I know, but it's just how I feel...
The "showery" part of my April has been mainly due to all the work I have. Right now there seems to be a bottomless pit in my workload. It seems relentless with test after test and paper after paper. Each week it's something new: a midterm for African Popular Music, a child-study paper for Child Development, a Stats exam. Luckily, despite my exhaustion I've been able to keep up. Maybe it's because of the promise of May; the promise of getting out for the summer, sleeping in late, spending time with friends? I have yet to tie down summer plans either, but I've also been relentless applying for internships, trying to contact employers and keep a positive attitude. While it might be raining on that aspect of my life too, I know good things will be sure to follow. It's also good to know however that it's not just me. There seems to be a heightened level of energy and work going on on campus. While everyone is stressed, people are also relishing their last days at Smith, trying to tie up loose ends in classes, completing projects and feeling a sense of accomplishment for getting through their work. Every few days or so the weather has been good to us, and I've seen tons of Smithies outside enjoying the sun and the lawn, or in Noho catching up on shopping and socializing. Today is one of the April rainy days, however.
Some other positive aspects of my life at Smith these days is of course my work with the Jazz Ensemble. This past Sunday was our 10th Anniversary concert, and although we didn't have a large turn out we played a great set. It was nice to see all of my hard work come to fruition as well...the catering, decorations, set-up and advertising all went off without a hitch. The band and I also sounded fabulous. I'll definitely put up some pictures of the event when I get the chance. I know I say it often, but I really love performing. I was also glad to see that my parents could make it to the concert and come to support my friends and me at this very special event.
I guess for the rest of the week it's back to work. :( I have some internship application deadlines to meet this week as well as my second study abroad application for Durban, South Africa as well as some tests and papers. It's going to be rough getting through everything but I know I can do it. Being a sophomore I've done it once before and know that Smith has given me the skill-set and the will to survive just about anything. More to come.... |
