Smith College Admission Academics Student Life About Smith Offices

 6 weeks and counting

March 26, 2009

The end of second semester is always a mixed time for me. On one end there is the promise of upcoming spring and getting to go outside again but on the other end, spring semester also means getting ready to close the academic year and with it leaving school for home in the summer months. Suddenly, this time seems all too real to me.

Spring Break was a blast ... I was able to visit my mom in Boston, my dad in New York and spend a few days in Tampa and Miami, Florida with some friends from high school. Although I was afraid that I would come back from break, wishing I could still be on it, I have been oddly refreshed and energized from the little break. Good things have been coming my way, surprisingly, too. Some of my poetry was featured on a blog for African American women and I have been given the opportunity to perform at a concert series at the Hartford Public Library with a family friend who is a pianist. Nothing makes me happier than being able to share my accomplishments and talents with the greater community. In addition, I've also been having a blast organizing the 10th Anniversary concert for the Jazz Ensemble coming up on April 5th, 2009. I am also really excited to perform in front of my family, friends and peers, especially wearing our brand new, super cool jazz tee-shirts :) I even managed to do well on my stats test that I took before break ... and I am determined to finish the semester off right with high scores on all of my assignments.

And still, I'm a little sad. The end of the year may be filled with stress, commitments and assignments but it is also the time when I am spending the last little seconds that I can with my friends here. Many of us will not be returning to Smith in the fall because of study abroad, or will be away when I return from study abroad in the Spring. I won't see them until senior year. Although the prospect of making new friends and having new experiences is also exciting, I want to make sure that I am able to cherish the time that I have left with them. Everything will be changing soon.

Other things are still left up in the air as well. I am still without a summer internship, although I am sure that I will be able to find something through either my own efforts or some of the Smith databases. I also haven't been accepted to my study abroad program yet, even though I am dying to tie-up any loose ends I may have about the next semester.

I also know I can't stress tho. It is my sound belief to take things a day at a time ... right now I am just looking forward to the 62-degree weather we are supposed to get tomorrow, hanging out with my friends this weekend and seeing my parents at my Sunday gig. Although things are uncertain and may seem stressful now, I also know that in the next six weeks things will work themselves out. :) More details to come...
