 Thanksgiving Traditions

November 25, 2008

As Thanksgiving approaches, we Smithies are finding ourselves fairly anxious to have another break from academics. My past few weeks have been pretty hectic with school and figuring out life. Being a Senior is somewhat stressful, but what is more taxing is the looming feeling that the end is near. My fellow senior friends are all going through the same thing; it's all pretty exciting and nerve-racking at the same time. I'm looking forward to the next chapter though, well as soon as I figure out what it is!

This weekend was a really great weekend to live in Sessions House, though. We started the weekend off with a Friday afternoon CoffeeHouse tea. There were some great presentations as usual. Then on Saturday some of the residents in the house had an afternoon movie marathon. And then, Sunday was the big day of celebration! Sessions House began a tradition of having a Thanksgiving dinner amongst residents, friends of residents and past residents. This Sunday we all gathered, bringing homemade foods and beverages, and sat around a huge table in the living room to share a family style Thanksgiving dinner. Everyone seemed to be having a great time, but I had to leave early to go to a concert in town.

I went to see Michael Franti and Spearhead at the Calvin Theatre. The show was pretty good and the last song really topped it off. Northampton certainly has a particular colour, and this was evident in the last song of the night when a girl, probably about 10 years old, came up onto stage to dance with Michael Franti, and they ended up giving her a microphone to sing along with him. She new all the lyrics to his rock/reggae finale love song, and she had some great rhythm! It was adorable, and I think it was the peak moment of the show!

But fun and active weekend aside, I am now back to the grind again for at least a few days. Classes this week Monday and Tuesday, and then Wednesday through Sunday I will be with my mom and step dad, and my step dad's family in upstate New York. Thursday we are going into the city for the day to see the Macy's Day Parade. It will be my first time in New York City, I'm looking forward to it, but I hope that it is not too cold!

Alright, back to work, back to work! Until next time! Wishing everyone a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday, and I hope we all stay warm!
