The Praxis program allows every Smith
student the opportunity to elect an internship funded by the college. As the members
of the 1997 Self-Study Steering Committee wrote in their report, "We are persuaded
that the educational experiences of Smith students are greatly enhanced when theoretical
learning is tied to practical experience...Such experiences can allow students to
explore academic disciplines in depth, providing the impetus for higher graduate-school
and career aspirations. These internship experiences can be thought of as apprenticeships
that make a significant contribution to the student's education."

Administered by the Career Development Office, the program
gives each Smith sophomore or junior access to a one-time $2,000 stipend that ensures
she can afford to participate in a summer internship that draws on her academic background
and builds on her career goals. Praxis allows students to use their stipend for internships
in fields where funding is not typically offered, such as the arts, start-up businesses
and some media as well as for collaborative activities with faculty. |
