The Phoebe Reese Lewis Leadership Program is a highly
acclaimed, innovative program designed to provide undergraduate women with hands-on
learning experiences and training in practical leadership skills.
One of the distinguishing characteristics of Smith women
is that they want to make a real difference in their communities -- professionally,
politically and socially. While the entire Smith experience provides the opportunity
to develop many of the essential skills for doing that -- the ability to think clearly
about complex issues, to see several sides to an issue, to reason analytically, to
find solutions for complex problems -- the Leadership Program enhances the intellectual
abilities and technical skills Smith women will need for successful leadership in
college and long afterward.
Any first-, second- or third-year Smith student can
apply to the program in the fall of the academic year. About 25 participants are
chosen annually, based on academic performance and motivation. Each year’s
group includes students from across the academic spectrum, in areas as varied as
philosophy and neuroscience. Many have already held leadership positions in student
groups; all see themselves as future leaders.
Accepted participants will receive a yearly stipend;
upon successful completion of all elements of the program they will receive a Phoebe
Reese Lewis Leadership Program certificate in addition to their undergraduate degree. |
