Esi Cleland says Smith encourages students to expand their academic experience beyond the campus.

Why is Smith a Women's College?

At Smith, what a student learns inside and outside the classroom -- and how she chooses to put together the pieces -- builds a sense of intellectual and social engagement that will empower her to make a difference throughout her life, in her community, in her profession, in the world.

As an engineering major at Smith, your pieces might include a research internship in electronics optical packaging in the microelectronics lab at IBM’s Thomas J. Watson Research Center along with the support and camaraderie provided by your fellow students in Smith’s pioneering engineering program. The first all-women class of engineers in the country graduated from this program in 2004. Its focus on bridging the humanities and sciences will give you a unique perspective on what your future could be in engineering.

You might put together membership in the student environmental group Gaia with an interest in landscape studies. Through your courses, your exploration of this evolving field might lead you to interests in anything from city planning or permaculture to a Praxis internship -- paid for by the college -- at the Royal Botanical Gardens in Surry, England.

Enroll in the Lewis Leadership Program, with its training in group dynamics, oral presentation skills, negotiation tactics and conflict management. Combine this with an internship in Washington, D.C., with the congressman who represents Smith’s district. While you’re on Capitol Hill, you might drop in on Representative Tammy Baldwin, Smith '84, a member of the House Judiciary Committee. Congress could benefit from more women. Who knows? You might be one of them.

Frequent visits to sessions offered by the Women and Financial Independence program, such as “Financing Life” or “From Backpack to Briefcase,” may pique your interest in economics and business leading to courses like “International Finance” or “Money and Banking.” How about an internship at Ameriprise Financial? To fill out your resume, add membership in the WFI investment club or a entrepreneurship project.

Browse through the Notable Women site and see how Smith women have made a difference over time: Pulitzer Prize winners, political columnists, environmental researchers, film directors, venture capitalists, you name it. And you can learn to make a difference, too.
