Smith's three-building athletic complex includes two full-sized
gymnasiums, a spectacular fitness center, a human performance laboratory, a rock climbing wall,
a studio with springwood floor for dancing and aerobics, a six-lane swimming pool and five glass-backed
squash courts. The indoor track and tennis building, the site of three national NCAA track meets,
includes four tennis courts and a 200-meter track.

The equestrian facilities include a 40-stall riding barn with indoor
and outdoor rings and a five-acre field as well as miles of trails.

Twenty-five acres of athletic fields augment the sports complex.
The outdoor facilities include a lighted field-hockey field, an enclosed softball diamond, 12
lighted tennis courts and an eight-lane, 400-meter all-weather track. The boathouse, equipment
headquarters for Paradise Pond, is open to all student groups for canoeing, rowing, sculling
and ice hockey -- weather permitting, of course.

The Olin Fitness Center is the latest addition to Smith's
athletic facilities. The 6,000-square-foot structure, opened in early 2004, is located above
the student lounge, between the Ainsworth and Scott gymnasiums. The air-conditioned facility
includes new weight stations, free weights, ellipticals, stair climbers, cycles, treadmills,
plyometrics and TV monitors. The center connects the Ainsworth and Scott buildings, enhancing
the accessibility of both. The fitness center is the gift of the Spencer T. and Ann W. Olin Foundation
through the generosity of two alumnae, Judy Olin Higgins '58 and Barbara Olin Taylor '54. |
