The Sophia Smith Collection staff regularly responds to reference requests by phone, mail, fax, e-mail (see Contact information), and in person. A picture I.D. is required on the first visit. Although it is not necessary to notify the reference staff in advance of a visit, researchers are encouraged to do so to be certain that the materials they wish to use are available. They may also request finding aids be sent in advance. For more information see Access to Collections and Visiting the SSC.

Our Reading Room tables are equipped with electrical outlets for laptop computers. A public computer provides access to SSC databases, online finding aids, Five College Library Catalog, Smith College Library electronic indexes and databases, and other online resources. Limited printing from the computer is available, free of charge. The public computer is for research use only, not for personal email or recreational use. Wireless network access is also available in our Reading Room and in most other locations in the libraries. Non-Smith users will need to obtain a login username and password from the Reference Archivist. For more information, see Wireless Network Access on the library Web site.

Photocopying and reproduction of images are available upon request and are generally performed by staff. For more information, see Duplication Services. Digital cameras are allowed in the reading room--please read our Digital Camera policies for more information. Personal scanners are not allowed.

Staff members are glad to make appointments or host group or class presentations about the holdings and the use of primary sources.  Faculty are encouraged to request group orientation sessions when they plan assignments using the Sophia Smith Collection.

For more information on our services and procedures, see Frequently Asked Questions.
