Apply Now: Sams Fund for Middle East Study

Summer Deadline: May 2

Summer proposals for Sams Fund awards are due on Thursday, May 2, 2024. The Sams Fund is a restricted fund established by Betty Hamady Sams ’57 and James F. Sams to support the study of Arab history, culture, politics, religion and art. The intent of the Sams Fund is to foster greater understanding among Americans and people of Arab countries. Smith College faculty, lecturers, postdoctoral fellows and currently enrolled students are eligible to apply. McCartney Hall Construction Site Disruption

Weekdays Thru Approx. April 17

Beginning on Tuesday, April 9th at the McCartney Hall construction site, a crane will be on site installing the sheet piling necessary to hold soil in place while the building foundation is constructed. Installation will involve a vibrating hammer hung from the crane that will vibrate the 40 ft. steel sheets into the ground. This work could be disruptive at times, due to vibration of the ground in the immediate vicinity of the construction site. The operation will run approximately 7 working days. Seismic monitors have been placed in all of the buildings near the project site to monitor vibrations at the building locations. These monitors will report directly to the project team in real time to be sure that safe thresholds for vibration are maintained at our buildings.

Reminder: Student Academic Year jobs end on May 10, 2024. The Student Employment office will end all additional academic year student jobs as of 5/10/24. If a student is to continue working during the Summer, they MUST be hired into a new Summer job as of May 11, 2024. Parking Citation Reminder

There will be an upgrade to the decal sales site launching in early May. Pending parking citations must be paid using the current website permitsales.net/smith before it is taken offline. Unpaid citations will be carried over to the new system and will result in the inability for a driver to purchase a new decal until their balances are paid in full. Any balances that are carried over will require the driver to pay in person during normal business hours at the Campus Safety Parking Office, located at 126 West St. Please email parkingdecals@smith.edu with any questions.

Apply Now: Human Rights Initiative Curricular Enhancement Grants

The Human Rights Initiative invites faculty and teaching staff to apply for curricular enhancement grants. Grants are available to support curricular/co-curricular activity that advances knowledge about human rights. This could include new courses, modifying or enhancing existing courses, or other initiatives. We welcome proposals from all disciplines. Grants can support course development stipends, course materials, guest speakers, and more. Recipients will be invited to share their experiences with these grants with faculty, staff and students. Rich is immersed in the stories layered within the landscape of Wantastegok (Brattleboro, VT). He chairs the VT Commission on Native American Affairs and is a public liaison/Tribal Historic Preservation Officer for the Elnu Abenaki. Tom is a terrestrial ecologist and prof. emeritus at Antioch University. Tom conducts ecology and sustainability programs throughout the country, and is author of 6 books, including New England's Roadside Ecology: Explore 30 of the Region's Unique Natural Areas. Academic Regalia for Graduating Seniors

Academic regalia will be available for purchase at the Smith College Bookstore starting April 15, 2024. Please visit the bookstore at 8 Green Street on or after April 15 to purchase your regalia. You do not need to place an order online in advance. If you received regalia through the SGA lottery and need a tassel, they can be purchased in person at the Smith College Bookstore, also starting April 15. If you have any questions related to regalia please call the bookstore at 413-585-4140.

Student Decal Sales Schedule for '24-'25 academic year

Online student decal sales for the '24-'25 academic year will open for 2025 seniors on July 24, 2024 at 8:30am EST. On July 31, 2024 at 8:30am EST sales will open for juniors to purchase any remaining decals. On August 7, 2024 at 8:30am EST if there are any decals left, sophomores will have the opportunity to purchase decals. Students will be ineligible to purchase a decal if they have unpaid citations. The Parking Office encourages students to settle any outstanding parking citations online as soon as possible.

Students who receive care at the Schacht Center and are in need of summer medication refills are encouraged to call 413-585-2800. Appointments through the end of the semester are limited and will fill up quickly. Follow-up appointments with a provider generally are required in order to receive medication refills to last through the summer. The Schacht Center is closed this summer after May 17 at 4:30 p.m. Appointments after May 3 will be limited to urgent appointments for students who are on campus. Please call or secure message through the Patient Portal with questions.

Elizabeth Killian Roberts Prize for Drawing

Deadline: April 16

Established in 1990 by family and friends in memory of Elizabeth Killian Roberts ’45, this prize is awarded annually for the best drawing. Entries are judged by faculty in the Department of Art. Limited to one entry per student. Winners receive a substantial cash prize. Enroll in Arabic Classes

The Arabic Language Program in the Middle East Studies is offering two first year Arabic classes next semester; in addition to the second- and third-year Arabic classes. Students will be introduced to a variety of Middle Eastern traditions and cultures; they will learn formal and colloquial spoken Arabic too. Arabic is the fifth most widely spoken language. The Middle East Studies Program offers grants and scholarships to study Arabic abroad in Jordan, Morocco, or Oman. The Arabic program at Smith involves students in activities like, Arabic music concert, projects with IT, Design Thinking, Smith Museum, and Botanical Garden.

Dance Data Project®: Using Data to Drive Gender Equity

Smith's Data and Statistical Sciences program will host a talk by Liza Yntema, president and founder of Dance Data Project® (DDP), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to uplifting women and girls in dance. Yntema will present DDP's most recent research findings, share current programming, resources, and advocacy initiatives, and discuss the crucial role of data in advancing gender equity. Through its research, programming, resources, and advocacy efforts, DDP highlights and uplifts women in the dance industry, while also shedding light on the inequities and limited opportunities faced by women in the field.

Susan Rose Internship Grant: Deadline Extended

All sophomores, juniors and seniors enrolled at Smith whose curriculum has included classroom courses in music are eligible—and encouraged—to apply for a Susan Rose Internship grant. The grant provides funding up to an approximate maximum of $5,000 for summer internships in music. Recent internships have included: Community music education (South Africa), Public radio and documentary internship (LA), Summer courses in music production (NYC), Study of Javanese Gamelan (Indonesia). OPT Information Session

ASA & SEASA: Spring Symposium With Memoirist Putsata Reang

Putsata Reang is a Cambodian-American author and journalist who was born in Cambodia and raised in Oregon after her family fled from war-torned Cambodia. In her memoir Ma and Me, Putsata explores the weight of cultural and filial obligation, the struggle of reconciling family and queer identity, and the legacy of inherited traumas from war and genocide. Putsata will present a talk about her memoir following up with a Q&A session, themes include intergenerational trauma, queerness, Southeast Asian and Cambodian identity, war and genocide in Weinstein Auditorium, April 21, from 2 pm to 5 pm.

Ritodhi Chakraborty’s research explores the promises and pitfalls of Ecological Masculinity in the Indian Himalayas. Working through more than a decade of engagement with rural communities in Uttarakhand state, using feminist and radical epistemic perspectives, he draws upon interviews, oral histories, visual ethnographies, social media data, surveys and participatory mapping to ask questions such as: Is Ecological Masculinity a sustainable and inclusive response to the (m)Anthropocene? Does it support or challenge historical (ongoing) mobilizations towards environmental and social justice in the region?

The History of Mental Health Treatment in the United States With Amy Ellis Nutt '77

Amy Ellis Nutt ‘77, Smith Alum and Pulitzer Prize winner, will visit campus to offer a public class on the history of mental health treatment in the United States. Nutt is a journalist and a New York Times bestselling author. She was the recipient of the 2011 Pulitzer Prize for Feature Writing for her reporting at The Star-Ledger on the 2009 wreck of the Lady Mary fishing vessel. Nutt is currently writing a book on the topic on the history of mental health treatment in the US and has a uniquely well-informed perspective to share. Reception to follow.

"Elixir: (Re)creating Spaces and Modes of Healing Across Diaspora"  Six senior studio art majors welcome you to our worlds of enchantment and healing. These are artworks that document our experiences grappling with race, religion, migration, and more, as we find art as the ultimate site of reimagining. Cities of Hope: Adaptation to Climate Change in Massachusetts
